I recall that in high school, a student attempted suicide mid-day in the bathroom by stabbing herself in the stomach. There was fear that it was gang related, and a number of students left mid-day out of fear. The interview that made it to the 6:00 news was of the class dopehead talking about how he didn’t feel that school was safe anymore. The news cut out the part where he explained that he was afraid of the ninjas in the cafeteria and the mafia dragons in the library (I say this on the basis of trustworthy witnesses who admitted that they just wanted an excuse to cut class).
That was when I lost trust in the media reports of selected individuals.
a guy named Furedi from UK had some good ideas on the precautionary principle and anxiety.
he says it is a loss of confidence.

Why on earth do people want to be obsessed by fear when there is no objective scientific evidence that there is anything to be afraid of. This obsession is behind a great deal of the AGW hysteria. I have a PhD in psychology but I can’t explain it.
I could not see anything about public health, only about what people fear might happen. They say ignorance is bliss, but it appears that ignorance only makes people fearful and they like it that way.
