Gore, WaPo trying to walk back false hurricane comments

You’ll need deep waders to through this…

From the WaPo:

Correction, 3:25 p.m. Friday: According to Ezra Klein, who interviewed Al Gore, he may have inaccurately transcribed Gore’s comments pertaining to hurricane categories. Gore’s staff said the former VP did not say: “The hurricane scale used to be 1-5 and now they’re adding a 6.” Rather, Gore told Klein: “The scientists are now adding category six to the hurricane… some are proposing we add category 6 to the hurricane scale that used to be 1-5.”

It would seem Gore initially misspoke and corrected himself. Thus, I retract the balance of my criticism – although his characterization of the links between hurricanes and climate change could have been more precise.

  1. Hilarious that they have to run cover for what Gore said on what is otherwise a minor (though funny) matter. But will any of his sycophants dare do any fact-checking on his accusation that skeptic scientists were paid by ‘big coal & oil’ to lie to the public about AGW. Not likely. But imagine the embarrassment if any of ’em were to discover Gore doesn’t have an iota of proof to back up what he said over the last 20 years about ‘industry corrupted’ skeptic scientists.

  2. From Wikipedia:

According to Robert Simpson [one of the inventors of the hurricane scale], there are no reasons for a Category 6 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale because it is designed to measure the potential damage of a hurricane to manmade structures. Stating that “…when you get up into winds in excess of 155 mph (249 km/h) you have enough damage if that extreme wind sustains itself for as much as six seconds on a building it’s going to cause rupturing damages that are serious no matter how well it’s engineered”

  3. ‘Some’? Who? Maybe ‘some’ guy Gore met in a coffeehouse?

This seems pretty weak to me.

Btw, was the former VP ‘misquoted’ when he stated on live TV that the temperature beneath the earth’s crust was MILLIONS of degrees?
