Russia’s Arctic jail cells too cold for Greenpeace pirates

The Guardian reports:

Some of the 28 Greenpeace activists and two journalists being detained in Russia while awaiting piracy charges are being kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, while others are held in “extremely cold” cells, according to the head of Greenpeace.

Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace International’s executive director, told the Guardian that the crew had been split up into several prisons across the port city of Murmansk in north-west Russia, which is in the Arctic Circle. Three of the group have been sent to a prison 150km away.

Naidoo said the organisation would have to “take into account” the way the protesters had been treated, but he added that Greenpeace had not been silenced by intimidation in the past and would continue to show “leadership” on the Arctic issue.

  1. Piracy, according to article 101 of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is DEFINED AS:
“… any act of boarding (or attempted boarding) … and directed: against a ship, aircraft, persons or _property_ in a place outside_the_jurisdiction_of_any_State … any act of voluntary participation in the operation of a ship or of an aircraft with knowledge of facts making_it_a_pirate_ship or aircraft”.

Greenpeace, did you get it? ANY ACT OF BOARDING (OR ATTEMPTED BOARDING).

It does not matter what kind of intentions.
It does not matter if weapon was or wasn’t used.
It does not matter if that was ship or oil platform as it was directed “against property”.
It does not matter if that was committed in international water.

Break law – serve your term.

  2. Some states are worse than others. In Texas they spend 23K per year. In California it is 55K per year. In CA youth prisons – to save money and make it easier on the youth, they mostly got pushed to county facilities, but due to union rules the youth prisons must stay open. CA pays 300K per year per youth still in the state prison system. Crazy huh.

  3. Greenpeace Idiots forced dutch government to lodge a complaint at marine tribunal. Now there is no way for Russia to make a gesture without loss of face. Stop digging when you’re in a hole

  4. It is an old and well-tested policy to incarcerate co-conspirators separately. That puts an immediate end to the conspiracies. I’ll bet they also don’t get the pamapered treatment they would have gotten in the US – the kind of treatment that means spending more per year to incarcerate a felon than to pay the tuition for a student to an Ivy League college.

  5. What are they complaining about? Thanks to green policies we are all facing energy cuts and fuel poverty such that we shall all be shivering in the coming little ice age. Let them freeze, I say!

  6. Warming is “imminent.” And more noticeable in higher latitudes. So, no worries as more of them are put into prison for their continued pirate leadership.
