Civil War? Blue vs. red on green

Michael Barone points out that the Waxman-Markey triumph in the House boils down to blue states (Northeast and West Coast) voting against red states (everywhere else) — to make one giant green state.

Krugman: Deniers are ‘immoral’ and commit ‘treason’ by opposing Waxman-Markey

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman seems ready to form a lynch mob for opponents of Waxman-Markey.

Krugman wrote today that,

And as I watched the deniers make their arguments, I couldn’t help thinking that I was watching a form of treason — treason against the planet.

Krugman added:

… To fully appreciate the irresponsibility and immorality of climate-change denial, you need to know about the grim turn taken by the latest climate research.

The fact is that the planet is changing faster than even pessimists expected: ice caps are shrinking, arid zones spreading, at a terrifying rate. And according to a number of recent studies, catastrophe — a rise in temperature so large as to be almost unthinkable — can no longer be considered a mere possibility. It is, instead, the most likely outcome if we continue along our present course…

Blah… blah…. blah… as Patrick Henry told the Virginia House of Burgesses on May 30, 1765:

“Caesar had his Brutus; Charles the First his Cromwell; and George the Third may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it!”

The American Revolution was started by British policies more justified and less oppressive than Waxman-Markey.

Waxman-Markey chart of new regulations

Today the U.S. Chamber unveiled what is becoming an annual exercise: a chart of the overwhelming number of regulations and mandates contained in the latest comprehensive climate bill. The Chamber’s chart, which maps out the regulatory process and implementation of H.R. 2454, the “American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009,” can be viewed at http://www.uschamber.com/media/pdfs/waxmanmarkey.pdf.

The 1,200-page bill, which consists of (1) a cap-and-trade program for greenhouse gas emissions, (2) a federal renewable electricity mandate and (3) a suite of new mandatory energy efficiency standards, will impose 397 new federal regulations (which require traditional agency rulemakings) and 1060 new mandates.
