It’s true that a modern economy involves better living through chemicals and it’s true that chemicals are all around us. But we’ve always been surrounded by chemicals. “Strawberries, milk, sugar and cream” reads the label on an ice cream carton: what do strawberries, milk, sugar and cream contain? Why, a chemical stew. The planet is a chemical stew; it has been since it formed and it will be until the red dwarf phase of the Sun.
There are harmful chemicals around, to be sure, but that’s also been true since hatters used to go mad and match-dippers died when their jaws fell off. Things are better, not worse.
