By attacking shale gas over CO2 emissions, the enviros are forging an even more powerful opponent on climate.
A WWF exec writes in a letter to the Financial Times:
… Though probably replacing dirty coal in the power sector, the potentially low price of abundant gas will also replace expansion of renewables and enhanced energy conservation, the true sustainable energy options. Hence, as regards climate change, a “dash for gas” is a zero-sum game, particularly as large-scale investments in new gas infrastructure create a lock-in, making deep carbon cuts in future impossible.
