That’s like saying “lebensraum” just meant “living space.”
In an article entitled “Virginia residents oppose preparations for climate-related sea-level rise,” the Washington Post tries to allay fears that the United Nations’ plan for global governance, called “Agenda 21”, exists, much less is being implemented or anything to worry about.
First, the Post gets enviros to essentially deny the existence and importance of Agenda 21:
…Agenda 21 is an agenda in name only, environmentalists say. The document encourages world governments to consider environmental impacts before developing land or slashing rain forests for resources, said Patty Glick, senior climate-change specialist for the National Wildlife Federation.
“Agenda 21 is the least thing they should be worried about,” said Glick, who like other environmentalists contacted by The Washington Post was surprised at the attention being given the document. “It has no legal or policy implication for local governments in the United States”…
Alrighty.
Here’s what the preamble to the United Nations’ “Agenda 21: The United Nations programme of Action from Rio” states,
… Agenda 21 addresses the pressing problems of today and also aims at preparing the world for the challenges of the next century. It reflects a global consensus and political commitment at the highest level on development and environment cooperation. Its successful implementation is first and foremost the responsibility of Governments. National strategies, plans, policies and processes are crucial in achieving this. International cooperation should support and supplement such national efforts. In this context, the United Nations system has a key role to play. Other international, regional and subregional organizations are also called upon to contribute to this effort. The broadest public participation and the active involvement of the non-governmental organizations and other groups should also be encouraged… [Emphasis added]
So Agenda 21 is a plan to be implemented — not something “in name only.”
