Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak underappreciates the extent to which coal makes Apple technology and his personal fortune possible.
Speaking to an American Wind Energy Association meeting, Wozniak said,
Coal plants are just obnoxious. Look at an Apple product. It’s cleanliness all the way through … people like that kind of beauty.
Let’s see:
- About half of Apple products run on, or are charged with coal-fired electricity.
- Coal makes electricity inexpensive for consumers so that they can buy expensive Apple products.
- Wind power is a rip-off that reduces consumer purchasing power.
- U.S. coal plant emissions harm no one.
- U.S. wind turbines kill tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of birds per year.

I’ve never read a more conservatively-biased article in my life. Coal emissions Hurt no one…? Coal is among the dirtiest sources of energy in the world… Burning it releases a huge amount of pollution, including but not limited to mercury, etc. it’s proven that people who live in short vacinities of coal plants are more prone to adverse health effects, including but again not limited to asthma, etc. If we want to create a cleaner and healthier world, the answer lies in clean energy, without fossil fuels. This is not to say that other energy sources such as hydropower or wind power don’t have their downsides and their own environmental reprocussions though…
I got curious about whether Apple recycles, and found that they have contracted with a company for you to ship, for free, ANY electronics to be recycled. The following is copy-and-pasted from Apple’s recycling page:
Recycle your computer or display free.
If all you want is to dispose of your unwanted equipment — regardless of brand — we can help you do that. Apple contracts with WeRecycle! to responsibly recycle computers and displays from any manufacturer. Just call 877-712-2405 to receive a free prepaid shipping label. Then pack up your equipment using your own box and send it off. For more information about WeRecycle!, visit http://www.werecycle.com.

No doubt if Steve had less money he would appreciate the cheaper electricity made available by coal power plants…Perhaps Steve should buy some Coal Power Plants, shut them down and replace them with windmills.
And don’t forget the nasty witches brew of chemicals that is used in the production of Apple products.
Hmmmm….I BET that in China where Apple produces, it’s disposed of / recycled / processed to the same standard as here in the US. /snark/
“Coal makes electricity inexpensive for consumers so that they can buy expensive Apple products. ” Especially when Apple products are made in coal using China.
Steve should clean his own house first. Maybe buy back all the old units or discount new one being sold for bringing in old units. What a concept. He needs to pick those green buggars from his nose first!
Why can’t they recycle them?
Don’t forget all the old units that are dumped in garbage piles and not recycled. All the trace elements and other components and boards that will lay in landfills for THOUSANDS of years.
