Investor’s Business Daily explains how Muller hid the decline.
IBD editorializes,
… According to Dr. David Whitehouse of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, “The global temperature standstill of the past decade is obvious in HadCrut3 data, which is a combination of land and sea surface data. BEST is only land data from nearly 40,000 weather stations.”
We have commented on the suspect locations of land-based monitoring stations in places like asphalt parking lots and near air-conditioning exhaust vents. Satellite monitoring data, a relatively recent technology, has given a more accurate and somewhat different picture.
As Whitehouse notes, using BEST’s own data, the temperature record of the last 10 or so years “is a statistically perfect straight line of zero gradient.” In laymen’s terms, warming has stopped. The only hiccups in the graph Whitehouse and his group produced from BEST data is attributed to natural phenomena such as La Nina.
Whitehouse states: “Could it really be the case that Professor Muller has not looked at the data in an appropriate way to see the last 10 years clearly? Indeed BEST seems to have worked hard to obscure it.” As in Climategate, do we once again have the manipulation and distortion of data to “hide the decline” in temperatures?
According to Whitehouse, BEST’s data was “smoothed using a 10-year average,” which “is an ideal formula for suppressing the last decade’s data.”
The ten year averaging is a poor way to report data for the last 110 years. It obscures the temperature rise from 1910 to 1940, the temperature fall from 1940 to 1975, and overemphasizes the temperature rise from 1975 to 1998. 1998 had a large increase due to a super El Nino that year.
I will be charitable and say there was no intent of distorting temperature data. But if you were trying to promote climate alarmism, this would be a way to present the data.

Especially with that nasty +/-4 C error bar once you get to 1850. Before 1910, the temperature record becomes effectively useless
Well, it couldn’t be the warmest decade in history. The geological record indicates that the climate during the Republic and Imperial periods of Rome was much warmer than it has been recently (meaning the last couple of centuries). Check sea level records for a tectonically stable shoreline, such as the South Florida Gulf Coast.

Good piece of reporting by IBD. I wonder if any of the “scientific” journals will figure it out as well.
Yes, al. But is it the warmest since the end of the Little Ice Age? Is it warmer than the warmest decade during the MWP? The RWP? The Minoan WP? And how do you plan to prove that?
Environmentalists are simply the new members of the national socialist party…A rose by any other name is still a rose…
Warmest decade compared to when, exactly?
Still the warmest decade though.
