Muller accused by colleague of hiding data

Muller-gate? BEST-gate? Climategate, Part 2? “A leading member of Richard Muller’s team has accused him of trying to mislead the public by hiding the fact that BEST’s research shows global warming has stopped, reports The Mail on Sunday.

According to The Mail:

Prof Judith Curry, who chairs the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at America’s prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, said that Prof Muller’s claim that he has proven global warming sceptics wrong was also a ‘huge mistake’, with no scientific basis.

Prof Curry is a distinguished climate researcher with more than 30 years experience and the second named co-author of the BEST project’s four research papers.

Poles apart: Former sceptic Prof Richard Muller (left) says the latest findings settle the climate debate once and for all. But Prof Judith Curry says such a claim is ‘a mistake’
Her comments, in an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday, seem certain to ignite a furious academic row. She said this affair had to be compared to the notorious ‘Climategate’ scandal two years ago.

Like the scientists exposed then by leaked emails from East Anglia University’s Climatic Research Unit, her colleagues from the BEST project seem to be trying to ‘hide the decline’ in rates of global warming.

In fact, Prof Curry said, the project’s research data show there has been no increase in world temperatures since the end of the Nineties – a fact confirmed by a new analysis that The Mail on Sunday has obtained.

‘There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn’t stopped,’ she said. ‘To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate.’

  1. (Follow-up: haven’t read the linked article yet – about to do that. Maybe that clarifies….)

  2. Question: anybody got a link to that chart’s source? Where does the discrepancy in the data come from? Who can vouch for the factual nature of the second graph? What’s the discrepancy a result of? I mean, so far we’re just arguing one person’s word vs. another’s, right?

  3. Porrf? dronk? If Margret is educated, one would expect better spelling. Plus, how does a warmer world equate with no crops (there are crops in areas warmer than the US), how does a warmer world equate with no water fit to drink (there is potable water in warmer areas), and how does a warmer world make power systems not function at all (that last one escapes me completely)?

  4. Obviously, you also follow the admonition, … “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain..”. Sadly, you also have the ability to cancel out MY vote, too.
I can also offer you a great deal on some swamp land in Arizona…

  5. Let’s ignore for a second that 70 years is but a dot in earth’s long natural history. Why is it that we won’t have crops, water or power anymore? Crops love CO2 and warm weather. If glaciers melt, we will have more water, albeit it will require desalinization. As for power, how does the warmer weather rob us of power? I’m afraid you’ve been the victim of the hysterical and very science challenged reporting on this issue.

  6. I find it encouraging that we have alarmists posting their propaganda on here. It never used to be that way. It tells me Mr. Milloy’s work is getting attention, and it drives the alarmists crazy! Keep up the good work Mr. Milloy!

  7. Based on my 70 years of observing the weather cycles, we are in the midst of global warming. If we don’t stop insisting on every last bit of porrf, we won’t have to worry about it any more because at least in the United States, we won’t have any crops, we won’t have water fit to dronk and our power systems won’t function at all anymore. The oil and gas producers will get richer in the process, so lets all help them by being super cautious while they take advantage of our stupidity.

  8. With 7,000,000,000 people on Earth, deforesting and burning the land black, over fishing, filling the air with soot, CO2, NO2, SO2, etc., increasing and accellerating as the polar ice and permafrost melts and all being observed by a huge fleet of space craft and I’m suposed to believe the all is hunky dory? I trust you are being “ployed” with. “Fox”, the magical news-like organism loves to make light of science and help the anti-environmentalists push their full-speed-ahead agenda and you are like pigs -at-the-trouth, sucking it all in… Try going to NASA.org and ESA, check their videos climate change…

  9. Promising transparency and delivering it are two very different things. Seems to me that Muller made his inclinations pretty clear a long time ago.

Are the quotation marks around Professor supposed to be some sort of pejorative comment?

  10. Unfortunately for “Professor” Curry, the BEST team promised transparency. She can bark at the moon all she wants, but the data doesn’t lie.
And thankfully, neither does Richard Muller.

  11. This is probably a very courageous act by Prof. Curry. The money from the U. S. government on climate research, which is essentially all funds for climate research, goes to those those who spread catastrophic global warming is taking place and it is caused by burning fossil fuels. Georgia Tech could be put at risk getting future funds because of a heretic on its staff. We may see a 21 st century Galilio trial taking place.

  12. One more thing: Judith Curry is actually the only real climate scientist on the BEST team. The others may have earned high prestige in other fields of science but they have not actually done any climate science. What is more, her contribution was a pro bono effort because she did not share in any of the funding that Muller’s team attracted.

  13. Anybody with a brain knows that the climate is cyclical….we go up for 30 years (+/- 10), we go down for 30 years (+/- 10), then back up. True, it never quite goes down to where it was, but it has been that way since the last ice age. Eventually it will swing where we our baseline is lower than the last time, and we will move to another ice age…in 10 or 15 thousand more years. This is not man-made, this is mother nature. And you know what? In 10 or 15 thousand years I don’t plan to be here, so I am not too worried…but at least my great, great, great, great…..great, great, great…..great, great, great grandchildren won’t have to pay for central air conditioning in the summer.

  14. Climategate – the story that just keeps on giving. As always with the AGW brigade, it’s not the decline that gets them pilloried, it’s their attempt to hide the decline. Grown-ups tend to learn from their mistakes; children apparently not.

  15. I thank the good Lord for people with integrity like Prof Judith Curry. And I thank her for being the brave person she is. It is because of people like her that I remain optimistic about the future of science. Thank you very very much, Prof. Curry.

  16. For sure. Unfortunately, none of this honest scientific info will ever see
the light of day on any MSM network. Mark my words! This is how they try to control public opinion. They just ignore the real facts and hope that we don’t bother to find out the truth. The MSM make me sick! What an embarrassment. Eventually the TRUTH about them will also be known by all!
