Obamanomics: Green jobs = Pay cuts

The Left still lambasts the trickle-down theory behind Reaganomics. Meanwhile, the green jobs theory behind Obamanomics is turning out to be more akin to a nose-dive for worker wages.

The hype

In campaign literature abotu creating 5 million “green jobs,” then candidate Obama said,

The Obama plan will increase funding for federal workforce training programs and direct these programs to incorporate green technologies training, such as advanced manufacturing and weatherization training, into their efforts to help Americans find and retain stable, high-paying jobs. [Emphasis added]

in its article about a March 26 White House “townhall meeting”, the Associated Press reported that,

Obama said job creation in America is difficult in a time of economic hardship and that the work of the future should be in more high-paying, high-skill areas like clean energy technology. [Emphasis added]

The reality

But CNNMoney reports:

Massive investment in renewable energy could ultimately create 4 million manufacturing jobs. But for the workers in the bottom rung of this movement, the shift to green jobs could very well mean a pay cut of nearly 60%, a trend spreading across the entire manufacturing sector.

Many of the entry-level jobs making green energy components start at $12 an hour, much less than the now extinct $28 an hour job that had allowed high school-educated workers in the auto sector to achieve middle class status.

“Particularly at the lower end, these are not very good jobs,” said Philip Mattera, research director at Good Jobs First, a labor-friendly research group, also acknowledging that the renewable energy sector paid wages that were “all over the map”… [read more]

Obama buddy Al Gore will possibly make more than a billion dollars from his “green job” — that is, investing in, and lobbying for cap-and-trade — but not everyone will be so fortunate.

  1. This Green Jobs concept is NUTSO! What if Obama said you pay 2cents a gallon for tapwater and we are going to hire extra people so you will now pay 4 cents a gallon. Green jobs are just that. But instead of paying 11cents a kWh for electricity, we will be paying 20 cents like Europe.

We will plug our lights in just like before, except it will cost more? This is not like building highways, increasing health care or giving money to the poor. The only people who benefit are those with the jobs, why not just everyone Beer, at least that will be enjoyable.

  2. It is about putting whitey in his place along with any one who believes in God , Country and freedom. Obama is the most inept uneducated person to ever hit Washington, he is power crazy and he will stop at nothing to get his way even if it brings us to total collapse. the things he is doing is nuts and will do nothing but destroy a great place to live and raise families. The green movement is sort of like a bowel movement ,it stinks.

  3. Here in Texas, we have been hearing radio ads (on the talk radio stations, no less) about how many new jobs Texas will have… if only Congress passes The 0bammunist’s envirolegislation. So call your Rep and tell him to vote for HB whatever or SB whichever.

Yeah, boys and girls! “These jobs will remain in Texas and can’t be exported to another country!” Frankly, these “new jobs” smell like nightwatchmen for wind turbines, or, worse still, door-to-door solicitors for “green” causes.

If green energy is such a great deal, why is it that only the gummint is interested? Why doesn’t some hot-shot “green” outfit like GE jump in with both feet and their checkbook) to reap the vast rewards? If it’s gonna be such a great investment, actual companies (Haliburton?) should be chomping at the bit to participate. [“Ecomagination”? sounds like a word invented for an episode of “The Simpsons.”]

  4. Frédéric Bastiat, in 1850, immortalized the concept of hidden costs by telling a story of a little boy who had broken a shop keepers window. The destruction of property is often unapreciated as a cause of chaos because it creates jobs. If the glaziers had paid little boys to break windows to improve their business, the activity would quickly be seen as criminal.

Green jobs are simply jobs that will force out other jobs that could be of higher value. The economy naturally seeks out and creates better jobs and it constantly fails to reward unneeded jobs like buggy whip makers and 8 track tape manufacturers. The broken window represents the lost opportunity to by other things.

In the future, the US might have had wonderful opportunities to invest in future technological break throughs like fussion, cancer cures or things we can not immagine. We won’t be able to do that because of the debt that we are shouldering now. Never has so much good money been thrown away on goofy stuff like bullet trains and solar cells.

We will be like the French who had to ask us to use our spy satelites to look for their lost plane. Their spy satelites were not flying because they spent most of it on socialism. The only problem is that we will not have a chance to ask some other country to rescue us.

  5. Nuclear power OK for Iran not for USA? It’s not only a little bit weird but totally outrageous!

  6. What does anyone expect who knows what “Barry” is really about? It is pathetic. When, if ever, will those who still, like someone in “puppy love” wake up and smell the coffee? This is a FIX! The FIX is in! This is all part of the plan to destroy the USA and pave the way for a “Metropolis”, corporatist, fascist world government. Radical greens are what Lenin would have called “useful idiots”. I wonder where the gulags will be for them when they are no longer “useful”.

  7. Isn’t it just a little bit weird that Obama thinks it’s just fine for IRAN to develop nuke power, BUT NOT US???
