Plastic bags cost almost nothing to create so they have a miniscule impact on environment. Reusable bags cost much more to make and they cost more to wash than the cost of plastic bags.So plastic bags are actually the less environmentally harmful option.
We reuse some of ours and we take the others to be recycled but it’s far from clear that recycling them is actually good for the environment.
