Emanuel’s wife really ‘ashamed to be an American’

Kerry Emanuel may simply say he is “ashamed to be an American” because of Republican climate skepticism, but his wife may take the cake.

Emanuel’s wife, the Boston-born Susan Boyd-Bowman, actually surrendered her U.S. citizenship to become a UK citizen. Unconfirmed rumor is that Boyd-Bowman never got over her 1960s-era anti-US militancy.

Though she lists her primary residence as Lexington, MA, she only has a U.S. resident visa.

  1. if it’s no big deal, why the elaborate hoops and red tape to keep people from renouncing their Canadian citizenship?

  2. Frank, I don’t see where the subject of this article and your post have any relationship.

Also had Churchill been an actual citizen of the USA I think that certain people in England would have “held it against him” in terms of being the prime minister of Englnad

  3. Frank, having one parent of American citizenship does not automatically confer citizenship. You must either be born in America or reside in America as a child (I forget the specifics, but there is a required number of years). Churchill was raised in Britain, so he was one of Victoria’s citizens, not one of ours.

This was the same situation that occurred with Obama, if his mother had not come home to give birth, he would not be an American citizen. That was probably deliberate on her part.

  4. Canadians have the legal right to retain citizenship on naturalization and to acquire citizenship of other countries. It is not a big issue in Canada and some Canadians find it difficult to understand why it is an issue for other countries.

If you were a Canadian citizen and became a US citizen after 1977 then you have never lost Canadian citizenship.

A declaration made in the US, official or otherwise, that you surrendered Canadian citizenship is not recognized in Canada unless registered in Canada personally by you following Canadian legal procedures for renunciation of citizenship. You may be required to appear before a Canadian citizenship judge before the Canadian government issues you a certificate of renunciation of citizenship.

If you were a Canadian and acquired US citizenship after 1977, then on April 17 2009 your Canadian citizenship was restored automatically, retroactive to the date you lost it. You don’t have to do anything.

Winston Churchill’s mother was an American, which probably made him a US citizen. But nobody held it against him. Not in Canada or in the UK.

  6. Maybe Kerry has to say he’s ashamed of the US in order to get nooky from his US hating hippie wife? 🙂

  7. Boston-born Boyd-Bowman (try to say that 3 times without spitting) surrendered her U.S. citizenship, but she still lists her primary residence as Lexington, MA?
How is the hypocrisy of this going unnoticed by her?
