“to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”
FIRST! there is no greenhouse effect in this hoax. So all this is to destroy our freedom (to travel) and our economy. If our media people did their jobs this nonsense would have ended decades ago.
note: a greenhouse effect requires a mid tropospheric hot spot, on the “ceiling”, but none exists (and never will). Our atmosphere is open to outer space which is at 1 to 2 degrees above absolute zero, one heck of a heat sink. Variations occur with variation in solar activity, our precession, our orbit as it is molested by the gas giants, the cosmic ray levels, and a dozen other natural things. None of which have anything to do with my back yard grill.
In a rural desert neighborhood populated with pickup trucks, SUVs, and other offroad vehicles, we always read with interest the outcomes of mandates to replace “gas-guzzlers” with electric vehicles.
Travelers’ tales of time-wasting waits for recharging at the few available charge stations give you pause.
Poor electric vehicle performance in cold weather limits usefulness in winter or higher altitudes.
Above all, complaints of pickup trucks with poor towing capacity hit close to home here.
We would assume these stories had come to the attention of California state officials, from the governor to the legislature, to the California Air Resources Board.
According to its website, “CARB is charged with protecting the public from the harmful effects of air pollution and developing programs and actions to fight climate change. From requirements for clean cars and fuels to adopting innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, California has pioneered a range of effective approaches that have set the standard for effective air and climate programs for the nation, and the world.”
Well, brag all they want, they have not shown themselves to be friends of rural workers and businesses. They may mandate rules, but they seem to be rules made in lala land.
The latest nonsense: CARB proposes to require all railroad freight locomotives to be zero-emission by 2035. Such equipment does not exist now and is impossible to imagine.
The estimate to replace a single diesel locomotive, battery-power would need almost 100MWh of energy. The largest today stores less than 5MWh of energy.
Maybe none of the CARB experts have waited at a crossing gate as the now-usual 100-car trains roll by, often powered by five or six locomotives that go out in all weathers, including freezing cold.
P.S. Now coming to a halt: the huge BNSF rail facility being built near Barstow to allow direct shipping from coastal ports and reduce pollution by lowering the number of trucks on the roads.
So, picture this:
-eLocos pulling our supply chain with stops at unimagined recharging stations, just like steam engine days with stops at every water tower.
-eLocos heading out night and day during winter weather, slowing and stopping until the next warmup.
-eLocos as limited in towing capacity as today’s ePickups, possibly because they also must tow their batteries and use power to keep them warm.
-wildfire hazards: San Bernardino County Fire Chief Munsey, at the invitation of our Congressman Jay Obernolte, testified to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology’s Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee, about the unique dangers of electric vehicle battery fires and lack of guidance for first responders risking their lives to extinguish them.
Oh well, maybe CARB won’t count air pollution caused by eLoco wildfires in places where no one can go but railroaders.
