Climate junk scientist James Hansen wasn’t the first to use the term “loaded dice” in regard to alleged human enhancement of environmental risk. That “honor” goes to Science magazine which use the term in its editorial heralding its May 1957 publication of the foundational paper of all cancer risk assessment, E.B. Lewis’ “Leukemia and Ionizing Radiation.”

Lewis paper was an immediate sensation, vaulting him from CalTech obscurity to headlines, NBC’s “Meet then Press” and congressional testimony.
Lewis’ paper changed everything in cancer risk assessment. It became the basis for the key regulatory assumption of the linear no-threshold model (LNT), i.e., there is no safe exposure to cancer-causing agents like radiation and chemicals.
But Lewis lied in his paper.
Lewis ignored warnings in three key data sets and inappropriately re-classified data in a fourth data set for the purpose of validating the politically motivated LNT, which at the time was being used as an argument to stop above-ground nuclear testing.
Lewis’ conduct is hard to explain by “honest error.”
