The rats were given increasing doses of chloroform until frank liver necrosis appeared (a huge and chronic dose). Then and ONLY IF NOT FED an adequate diet they would develop liver cancer, thus clearly establishing the carcinogenicity of chloroform (in a special breed of poisoned and starved rats). The 'special circumstances' were left out of the abstract and conclusions...
