Marvelous! A totally voluntary tax on environmentalists!
BTW, I don’t think they actually bought the leasing rights. They probably leased the drilling rights from the government, which still retains the ownership of the rights and the right to re-lease the drilling rights when the Williams’ lease expires. If there is a likelihood of petrochemicals under the land and the prices go up enough, they may be outbid at that time by someone who DOES intend to drill, and who has far deeper pockets than the Williamses.
Or for a really cold winter, maybe?
I’m all for it — Save it for a rainy day.
