I have recently spent time in the down-town areas of Kiev and Odessa in Ukraine, and the down-town of Chisinau, Moldova. These are densely populated cities. Trees grow in abundance in these Eastern European urban centers where winter temperatures are akin to Chicago. City parks dominate Kiev, Odessa, and Chisinau. In downtown San Francisco and San Jose, natural trees and parks thrive.
I don’t buy the ‘shallow root’ argument at all. I sense something sinister and greedy behind the bald assertion that artificial trees will work more effectively than what nature affords in abundance.
