The mode of operation of electric cars is the same as that of diesel-electric train locomotives with the difference being that with the diesel-electric system the diesel power plant and the generator go along for the ride whereas electric cars are powered by stationary electricity generating stations who are most likely being powered by CO2 producing fossil fuels of some kind.
Trains that are powered by rail tracks that have been electrified are being powered by whatever fuel is being used to generate the electricity with which the tracks are being electrified.
And, by the way, the action of money in economies more resembles that of a lubricant, rather than that of a driving force producer/provider. Money, as a medium of exchange, acts as a proxy for energy — in both directions.
