A cynic (me?) would say that the anti-nukes want it this way. Hoping for that “mishap or misdeed”. Thus killing nuke forever (or at least a long time) because of scare publicity.
Earnest’s concern over ‘how long it has taken’ should be directed to a more important issue – why after 33 YEARS of effort (1978-2011), the Nuclear Waste Repository required by law of the DOE (and approved in 2002) not only failed to be completed but was defunded, leaving existing (and ever-growing) collections of high-level radioactive waste on the earth’s surface – and vulnerable to mishaps and misdeeds.
