A county in northern New Mexico just banned drilling, urged on by enviro activists.
Imagine that–40 years ago the water and air and whatever else was proposed to be a “public trust” and that was the beginning of the erosion (pun) of property rights, a fundamental right in America.

Greetings!
This week’s column is unique. I wrote it about a month ago and have been holding it until the right time: NOW! Tuesday is the one year anniversary of the Mora County drilling ban—making this the perfect time to expose the little county’s actions with big national implications.
After a lot of research and interviews with the locals, I wrote the story for Capitol Research Center’s Green Watch publication. Their full report (5500 words) will be published in the May 2014 print edition being mailed out on May 1. However they are very generous with others publishing the piece as long as it references Green Watch as the source. Because my original version was nearly 5500 words, I’ve edited it down to closer to 2500 for the general distribution. But even that, I know, is long. I’ll be producing a 900 and 600 word newspaper version and this morning got it down to almost 1000 words. My first pass at cutting it down had me close to 3500 words. So, for you, I’ve done something I have never done: I am attaching several different versions so you can use the length you feel is best for your audience. (2500 word version pasted-in-below.)
Green Watch made some changes to my original version and added some important information on CELDF and the lawsuits—after all, their audience is “inside the beltway.” I’ve chosen to offer you my full version because it contains more human interest and is less in the weeds. Plus, on May 1 folks can read their version. The story needs to get out there, regardless of the version. Please post, pass on, and/or personally enjoy Mora County’s Drilling Ban, the Moral High Ground or Moronic?

I expect to be told any day now that I have to wear some kind of symbol that all can see that marks me as an independent, and therefore dangerous, thinker.
These watermelons should be wearing brown shirts.
