Big Typhoon History

The claims of the fanatics that Haiyan (Yolanda) is the worst ever typhoon to make landfall conflict with the facts of typhoon history.

I guess we should look to the past to determine something about the claim, and then we see from this record that Haiyan was less than present.
Historically the worst typhoon in the past 4 decades appears to have occurred in 1970 and hit Japan with winds of 171-193, long before Hansen’s dramatic presentation on warming. However there are others in the past 3 decades that were as bad or worse than Haiyan (Yolanda) in descending order 1987, 91, 81, 85,and 90.
Is the truth always the skunk at the warmer party?

  1. I read it was only a Level 4 when it hit. Unless Al Gore just invented level 5 (along with his recent proclamation of 6), this storm was strong, but wasn’t even in the strongest category.

  2. We call them “Climatites”. They have enough zeal to make the inquisition seem like a parlor game.
