A “convincing hypothesis”?
The BBC reports:
The researchers believe that the global trade in crops is mainly responsible for the movement of pests and pathogens from country to country.
However, the organisms can only take hold in new areas if the conditions are suitable, and the researchers believe that warming temperatures have enabled the creature to survive at higher latitudes.
Dr Bebber said: “The most convincing hypothesis is that global warming has caused this shift.
“One example is the Colorado potato beetle. Warming appears to have allowed it to move northwards through Europe to into Finland and Norway where the cold winters would normally knock the beetle back.”
I don’t know about other places, but here this summer and last we have had a dearth of all insects. All summer long only a few millers, a few blowflies a few wasps. Almost no mosquitoes, some honey bees later in the summer. Grasshoppers which are usually a real problem are almost non-existent. No aphids, no slugs, no leaf hoppers. I have no idea why, just a FYI post.
iT MUST BE TRUE BECAUSE WE DIDN’T HAVEONE OF THE MILLIONS FORECAST OF CICADAS THIS YEAR. wHERE DID THEY SPREAD TO?
There are many insects from other areas in the us that have destroyed most of eastern hemlock forest (wollyadalgid), There are so many invasive species, insects and plants that have spread since the first setters arrived from over seas and continue to spread around the world.. Not global warming, just cycles in insects and invasive species as the spread around the world from humans.
