Wheel of Fortune is playing in front of crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York City this week. Host Pat Sajak took the opportunity to poke a little fun at America’s leading paternalist, Michael Bloomberg. Sipping from Big Gulp-sized soda — with many in the audience laughing on — Sajak informed the crowd that he had just discovered “cola is better with trans-fats in it.”

I’m sure you have a dog in this fight, which I don’t personally. Your point that this rule would have been useless is valid. Most visitors here are aware of that point and we’re even more keenly aware of the threat to liberty that comes from people like Bloomberg.
It’s easy for Pat Sajak and so many others to make fun of this proposal because it’s just so misguided. Yes, obesity is a problem, but it’s also a complex issue that’s influenced by many risk factors (such as age, genetics, stress, physical inactivity, etc.). It simply can’t be addressed by bans and restrictions on one particular product. The only thing Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal would have done was limit consumer choice and disproportionately hurt small businesses.

Mr. Sajak has been quietly conservative for a long time. He used to have a right-leaning website but I don’t think he runs it now. Of course that little dig was more libertarian than conservative.
