The funny thing is they always say the Internet thing was a misquote – even snopes says Al didn’t say he invented the Internet. The only truth to that is he didn’t use the work invented, but synonyms instead.
“During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.” – Al Gore
Took the initiative to create the Internet – Invent the Internet – the quote isn’t any less pompous no matter how you read it.
