Large asteroid heading to Earth? Pray, says NASA; 1 km-sized asteroid could ‘plausibly end civilization’

Please go back to worrying about what the temperature nowhere on Earth will be in 100 years.

“An asteroid of that size, a kilometer or bigger, could plausibly end civilization,” White House science advisor John Holdren told legislators at the same hearing.

  1. A 1-km asteroid strike would generate more energy than Big Oil and Big Everything Else ever did and without burning any coal at all. It would be the ultimate Green Energy except there would be, well, no environment at all afterward. That might reduce the benefits to women and minorities.

  2. If the ateroid hits, the following will be blamed:
    1. global warming
    2. the sequester
    3. the NRA
    4. George Bush
5.. (feel free to add other “plausable” causes

  3. There are some asteroids out thar quite big enough to split the whole planet; minorities and women will be most affected. I dunno what size asteroid we can realistically expect to divert. I’d rather see money go down that rathole, with the attendant engineering and industrial benefits, than down the AGW rathole, which is all about constraining rather than enhancing lifestyles.
I’ve read speculation — too thin even for a theory — that a collision split the Moon off of the Earth or that the Moon itself hit the earth. I’m sure women and minorities were most affected then, too.

  4. read: “Send more money.” Hopefully they realize that the climate gravy train is winding down, and they need a new boogieman to keep their jobs.
