New pay-per-mile scheme would boost gas taxes 250 percent

This is not necessarily unreasonable until you consider the nature and habits of our spendthrift, power-grabbing, anti-personal liberty government.

“An on-again, off-again move by the Obama administration to scrap the federal gas tax in favor of a pay-per-mile fee would boost the tab to Americans as high as 250 percent, raising their current tax of 18.4 cents a gallon to as high as 46 cents, according to a new government study.” [Washington Examiner]

  1. When the inevitable is over, the country will be back on track. Again, nature corrects things–too much stupid is its own demise. Messy, but it’s what happens when smart stands by and lets stupid raid its checkbooks, schools and politics.

  2. If it must come, let it be as BoH suggests. I for one believe we are Taxed Enough Already, but until we get a new government, I doubt Washington D.C. will ever share that opinion.

  3. Pay-per-mile tax is an evil intrusion into privacy.

If they want more money, they can simply raise gasoline taxes. Gasoline usage is an excellent proxy for miles traveled.
