Al Gore’s ‘melting’ Antarctic claims refuted by reality

Climate Depot’s A-Z Climate Reality Check makes a mockery of Gore and company’s claims.

From ClimateDepot.com:

Al Gore’s trek to Antarctica with global warming activists Richard Branson, NASA’s James Hansen and Climategate’s Kevin Trenberth among many others, is designed to alarm the public that somehow something is amiss there. Gore is warming of a melting continent.

“The ice on land is melting at a faster rate and large ice sheets are moving toward the ocean more rapidly. As a result, sea levels are rising worldwide,” Gore wrote on January 31 during his visit to Antarctica. [See: Gore in Antarctica! Warns of rapid melting and rising seas! See more reports on Gore’s Antarctic trip here.]

But beginning on page 7, Climate Depot’s A-Z Climate Reality Check makes a mockery of Gore and company’s claims.

  1. The advocates time is running out, no matterwhat al has to say.

CO2 warming views, from advocates and skeptics, are out in vast numbers. Advocates are just repeating past claims; the skeptics are increasing in large numbers; proving the advocates wrong in every scientific claim – the well-read scientists are winning.

At last count, 22 non-fiction books support the position that the CO2 theory is wrong. Most important, the reason for the very modest warming the Earth has seen since the cold Little Ice Age (1300 to 1850) has been well documented – see Unstoppable Global Warming by Singer and Avery. The famous physics lab CERN, in 2011, has confirmed previous studies discussed in this book; the cause is the sun, amplified by cosmic rays (particles, mostly protons from previous supernova explosions – star dust). The modest warming and cooling cycles have been seen in temperature proxy records, from around the world, for many thousands of years, and in ice cores for the last one million years.

Moreover, the “sun/cosmic ray” cause matches our solar system sojourn around the Milky Way galaxy. The times the Earth passes through the spiral arms of the galaxy (heavily laden with cosmic particles) correlates extremely well with the major glaciations in Earth’s history over several billion years (read Heaven and Earth: global warming, the missing science by Ian Plimer, a famous geologist from Australia).

CO2 has never, and is not now causing any warming of significance. 98% of mankind’s CO2 emissions occur in the lowest levels of the atmosphere where laboratory results show additional CO2 saturates. The resultant temperature of a parcel of air from latent heat release, convection, etc. determines its blackbody radiation – a spectrum of many wavelengths. Both CO2 and water vapor have large wavelength ranges (open windows) that emit heat to space – acting as natural brakes on runaway warming of the atmosphere.

Further, increased CO2 is good for plants, animals and humans. There is no life without the mutual exchange of CO2 and oxygen between us and the plant world. At 200 ppmv the plant world would be rendered inoperable; at the current CO2 levels of 390 ppmv we have a green revolution. Doubling or tripling the CO2 causes insignificant warming (it has been 7 times what we have today with a major ice age; and 25 times what we have today with no runaway heating) and great benefits for food production. Read the NIPCC report Climate Change Reconsidered for the positive benefits of increased CO2.

The advocates refuse to read these books. The masses do not understand them – it is a difficult subject for a non-scientist. I have made it easy for the non-scientist by creating a fictional story about a nationally televised debate on this issue in 2012. The novel’s hero is a climate scientist that has studied both sides of the issue; he is a climate modeler who has switched sides and now is against the advocates. With 40 years of media hype, the rich business men (with carbon offset money in their pockets) and powerful politicians (having raised fossil fuel taxes in virtually every country of the world) do not want the “reverse Robin Hood” scenario to end “robbing from the poor and giving to the rich.”

The powerful opposition has heard the hero, a charismatic speaker, in action and wants him out of the way — drama ensues. The hero’s final speech summarizes the flaws in the CO2 theory in laymen’s terms. See http://www.rexfleming.com to read EXPOSURE.

  2. Depth of sea water in Chukchi and Beaufort Sea ~ 150 ft in drilling area.
Iceberg supposed to be size of NYC, with a draft of greater than 500ft. – 500ft won’t fit in 150ft water depth.
The Peterman Glacier calved off 250sq kms – 4x bigger than Manhattan, from western Greenland Aug 2010,
The Jakobshavn Glacier calved off a 1000 ft chunk , from western Greenland Jan 2009. Both ended up in the Atlantic Ocean.
So where is this NYC sized monster ? Name and origin.
Human stupidity will always be with us, another good reason for the pipeline from Alberta’s oil sand to continental US would be safer than shipping the oil to the US or to China.
May I suggest that you get your facts straight on the Deepwater Horizon disaster on which 11 men died.
The rig caught fire, possibly due a high pressure gas bubble, the rig sank and hairpinned the drill pipe.
The blowout preventer with it’s shear ram met regulations, but may have had a design problem.
The blowout preventer system to be used in the new ventures by Shell, are being designed, manufactured and tested in the US to very strict standards.

  3. The ice berg I’m talking about is breaking off from Greenland right now. The Greenland ice cap is about one mile thick and the iceberg about to break off is supposed to be about the size of New York city! If true, it’s draft is going to be much more than 500 feet and no drilling equipment made by man will withstand it. Wherever it touches the the bottom, that area will be scrubbed clean.
There is a cruise liner run aground in the Mediterranean right now because of human stupidity and ten or more Liberian tankers sink every year. No number of satellites will end our ability to make stupid mistakes.
BP was supposed to have state of the art blow out protectors too, impatience and greed ensured that what happened would happen. Are the people planning this drilling supermen or saints? Or merely human?

  4. The largest icebergs are normally from Antarctica – ice shelf calving.
In 1958 a large iceberg ~ 551ft above sea surface, calved from a glacier on western Greenland. With 1/9th of an iceberg being above the sea surface, it’s draft would preclude it from affecting drilling in 150 ft deep water.
Now with eyes in the sky, satellite surveillance, Coastguard aircraft, there should not be another “Titanic” situation.
With drilling rigs designed for severe North Atlantic operations in far deeper water as examples of well known technology, Beaufort and Chukchi Seas should be just another job.
There are existing rigs as shown on the map of Prudhoe Bay, ice thicknesses and density shown on the previously posted – http://www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil/hycomARC/
The ADN news item on Shell lists a mandatory (since the Macondo field disaster) shut-off valve for automatic control of any loss of oil line, to prevent a spill.

  5. Interesting, how deep is the draft of an ice berg the size of New York city? How would this equipment fare against an ice berg of this size?

  6. True, that is one reason but not the only one. The melt rivers flowing off of Greenland melts its way through the ice and acts as a lubricant and also speeds the ice on its way. The Ross ice shelf in the Antarctic collapsed because melt water ate its way through the sheet and caused it to collapse.

  7. The situation for drilling is different than what exists (eg.Macondo) in Gulf oilfields.
The water depth is 150ft at the sites in Chukchi, as against 5000+ft. Considerable support and safety vessels to accompany drilling as shown in this ADN news item:
    http://www.adn.com/2012/02/05/2301231/ap-interview-shell-hopeful-for.html.
Technology exists for this exploration/drilling as shown at Prudhoe Bay, North Slope Alaska oilfieds.
An interesting and not too O.T. are these pages on Prudhoe Bay. The map dated 2001 shows oil wells 10 mile into the Beaufort Sea, which also ices up each winter.
    http://www.d.umn.edu/~hoef0049/prudhoe.html
Have you ever watched “Ice Road Truckers” a series on the perils of providing gear and fuel to Prudhoe Bay – over ice roads across the sea ?

  8. GreggM — I think you should read up about on ice sheets. When an ice sheet suffers warmth it melts and shrinks drip by drip not by big chunks. When glaciers and ice sheets are growing, big tongues of ice extend over the ocean and break off due to wave action — so the evidence of large bergs is evidence of growing ice sheets not melting

  9. Nice, actual science, however you didn’t answer my main concern, can any of their equipment take the kind of pressure that comes from colliding with a big ice berg or the grinding from ice break up in the spring?

  10. The ice is “not quite gone”, when you consider the requirement placed on Royal Dutch Shell’s explorations.
During open water season – please check the current ice thickness and flow – US Naval Research’s site is a good start.
    http://www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil/hycomARC/
Then there’s the well reported item and a Youtube video of the Russian tanker MT Renda and USCGC Healy, bringing urgent fuel supplies to Nome – From Nugget Productions, Nome Alaska, an instance of co-operation by US and Russia players.
This is sea ice in the Bering Sea, further south than the proposed drilling sites.
    http://youtu.be/eFGa6ZeNA7Y
    And the drilling:
3x exploratory wells in the Chukchi Sea
Second drilling of exploratory wells in Beaufort Sea
Bureau of Ocean Management approved Dec 2011
One stipulation, drilling must be ‘stilled’ 38 days before ice is projected to engulf drilling sites.
Reason for driling being ‘stilled’ – Hint: watch the ice movement in the Youtube
Simultaneously ice breaking off in Antarctica and Greenland ??? Please check the ice flow shown on the Hycom site, posted, it will explain ice movement in the vicinity of Greenland.

  11. True, icebergs have been around forever but ice bergs the size of New York? Simultaneously breaking off in the Antarctic and Greenland while glaciers around the world are disappearing, and Shell is drilling in the Arctic because the ice is gone. The icebergs are only one additional bit of information, Gleick does an excellent job of spelling it out.

  12. Another member of this clique of Climate deniers visiting the Antarctic with Al Gore, James Hansen, Kevin Trenberth and Richard Branson is the Chief Executive of the UNFCCC, Ms Christiana Figureres, who has overseen Cancun and Durban climate conferences.
This person could have more influence than any other member, due to her position in the UNFCCC.

Gore’s blog has been talking about the calving of Pine Island Glacier on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. We soon will be presented with the “frighteners” about huge ice sheets breaking of and melting raising sea levels. ( a replay of the scenario of the Wilkins Ice sheet that was recycled over two years by MSNBC and other warmist supporting news media).

GreggM – the Pine Island Glacier cracking and calving, just as the Wilkins Ice sheet cracked off in calving is a natural progression of glacial movement toward the ocean. The ice sheet floats on the seawater, and eventually breaks away forming large icebergs.
Australian history tells us about loss of sailing ships crossing the southern Indian Ocean around latitude 40deg South during the 1800’s, due to iceberg collisions.
That was before rises in CO2 and Climate Change attributed to anthropogenic sources.

  13. Of course you haven’t heard about the ice berg about to come off Antarctica that’s the size of New York City or the one about to come off Greenland that’s twice as large at the same time. Wouldn’t want reality to intrude on your denial, would you?

  14. The Russian scientists in Antarctica have gone missing. They have until Tuesday to evacuate. Winter is setting in. It was minus 40 degrees C. at their base. Not even the cold heart of a junk science preacher can melt at that temperature. The record is minus 89. So is Al even blogging from there. They took James Cameron. Where’s the pictures? I’m the host of Toronto’s top conspiracy show Conspiracy Cafe on That Channel.

  15. OK IF THIS WAS REAL, WOULD ONE NOT THINK THAT THE SUN HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS,
SINCE LATELY WE HAVE HUGE SOLAR FLARES SHOOTING TOWARDS THE EARTH CAUSING CHANGES
    IN OUR WEATHER.

I AM SORRY YOU FOOL AL BUT GOD IS IN CHARGE OF OUR WEATHER, WE HAVE A SELF HEALING
PLANET.. THE CONCEIT THAT WE CAN CHANGE THE EARTH.. ITS BEEN DOING THIS FOR 600 BILLION YEARS
AND IT WILL KEEP CHANGING FOR ANOTHER 400 BILLION YEARS LONG AFTER WE HAVE GONE AL GORE.
I ONLY HOPE YOU GO SOON, YOUR LIKE A FLEE TO THIS PLANET. GO TO THE MOON AND START YOUR
OWN GLOBAL WARMING THERE.. I WILL START A COLLECTION IF YOU RUN OUT OF YOUR BILLION OF
DOLLARS THAT YOU CONTINUE TO RECEIVE AND ITS ALL STOLEN FROM YOUR LIES… GOD WILL CATCH
UP WITH YOU SOOON OR LATER.. WE ALL PAY FOR OUR CRIMES… AND YOUR NOT A VIETNAM VET JUST A STUPID COWARD REPORTER THAT WAS JUST DRUNK IN SAIGON…

  16. It’s amazing how much disproof industry funded research can find, they could probably prove the moon is made of green cheese and you would swallow it hook line and sinker!

  17. Adding insult to lies, we the taxpayers are footing the bill for Gores security protection. Since he goes around stirring up trouble with his lies and fraud he should be required to provide his own security. He had made millions off his fraud so it isn’t that he couldn’t afford it. However, like any liberal he prefers to spend other peoples’ money rather than his own.

  18. PLEASE tell me one of those Antarctic sailing idiots have frostbite on at least a finger or toe!

  19. “Hate crimes” only protect groups the liberals like. One can hate straight, white guys, Christains, right-to-lifers and climate deniers. I actually think Al Gore learned from his last trip–he went in the summer this time so as to gaurantee melting ice. He apparently forgot seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere and went in the winter last time. It’s not illegal to lie in the US. If it were, our jails would be full. The only way to stop this is to teach people the truth and hope they get it. Lies are much easier to sell, sadly.

  20. This evil man Gore has been caught out so many times telling lies, is there no legal mind in the USA that can bring him to task – there must be dozens of laws that his crap hype has broken not the least of spreading hate to those who do not believe his cynical banter (or have not ‘hate’ crimes reached the US yet?)

  21. Gore visits Antarctica in High Summer and reports that the ice is melting.

I don’t know where he made the measurements on the rate of melting of ice sheets or the rate of sea level rise. I’m sure it would take more than one day to do that.
