American Lung Association Board member Cerullo writes:
President George H.W. Bush, when signing the 1990 Clean Air Act amendments, noted, “Every American expects and deserves to breathe clean air.”
He was right, and the same is true today. The costs of toxic air – to our health, our economy and our quality of life — are too great to be ignored. Fixing the problem of unhealthy air is just common sense.
That’s why the healthy air protections provided by the Clean Air Act have long enjoyed bipartisan support. Sen. Edmund Muskie’s 1970 Clean Air Act helped turn the tide on years of unfettered pollution. That legislation was signed into law by President Nixon.

- Typical ambient air quality has never killed anyone in America — likely no one in the world has ever been killed by typical ambient air quality.
- The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 have not prevented a single “premature death.”
- Ambient air in America is clean and safe.
- The American Lung Association is paid by the EPA to scare Americans about air quality.

What good is cleaning the air if the air today, which is much cleaner than before, is just as dangerous?
We are seeing no return on our investment.
If this were a scientific experiment, we would be forced to conclude that our assumptions that air quality is connected to health were false.
