Tax Bicyclists for Polluting

If carbon dioxide is a polluting greenhouse gas, it’s only fair that everyone pays their share of carbon taxes …

Lawmaker Wants to Tax Bicycle Pollution

Imagine you’re a Seattle cyclist merrily commuting to work on your bike, a thermos of fair trade coffee in hand and a hemp messenger bag slung over your shoulder. You’d think you were Gaea’s gift to environmentalism, right? WRONG! You are a goddamned monstrous eco-villain! So says Rep. Ed Orcutt (R-Kalama), the ranking Republican on Washington State’s House Transportation Committee, in a letter to a bicycle store owner:

“If I am not mistaken, a cyclist has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider. Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.”

This was Rep. Orcutt’s explanation for why he’d be supporting a sales tax proposal that would require everyone who buys a bike for more than $500 to pay a $25 fee…

But, it seems, making light of something as serious as global warming isn’t popular and the Congressman has since backpedaled on his statement.

  1. I would like to see a comparison of CO2 produced by a human walking two miles to a 1600cc car driving the same distance. I suspect the car still produces a lot more CO2 than a human walking, running, or using a bike.
But of course the whole CO2 thing is a chimera.

  2. Orcutt was obviously (to me) being sarcastic, but the problem with sarcasm is this: No matter how good you are at it, a large percentage of the population just won’t get it! Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” is an early example.

  3. Let’s not forget the other GHGs from a cyclist, dihydrogen monoxide and methane….

  4. If we could quantify smug, that would be a great thing to tax. Everyone would have skin in the game but the worst would have the most.

  5. This Rep. Ed Orcutt ( R ) Klamma is a clown to begin with! He likes HB 1128 A Public Records Response
Bill. But it has language in it that if you are a person
that likes requesting public records a few times a month.
Then the govt can injucntion you by court action to not get a public record you requested.

This Rep. is a dork and more democratic!

And i’m not to suprised on what the Rep. Orcutt said about Co2 , Thanks everyone !
