Study: Diet sodas cause diabetes

Diet soda drinkers are probably already at greater risk of diabetes — that’s why they’re drinking diet soda.

“Artificially-sweetened sodas have been linked to a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes for women than sodas sweetened with ordinary sugar, according to French research unveiled today.”

  1. Were they asked about their motivation for drinking diet as opposed to regular sodas?
Were they diabetic before the study began, or did they develop diabetes during the study?
Were the women aware of their diabetes at the time of the study?
What were the family histories, and what impact, if any, did the knowledge of family history have on their decisions to drink diet soda?

Or are we just observing a correlation?

  2. More fishing for ‘risk factors’ – because it is easier to get continuing finding, and actually identifying the *cause* may lead to 100% effective treatment, cures, or (Heaven forbid!) PREVENTION. That would seriously impact the multi-billion dollar pharma industry.

  3. “Information on beverage consumption was not updated during the follow-up, and dietary habits may have changed over time,” the paper said.

    Ya think?

    Cheers

  4. Aspartame acts in raising blood sugar in a manor similar to regular sugar? I test my blood sugar 4 to 6 times a day and have never seen a rise in blood sugar after drinking soda with aspartame. There is an immediate rise in blood sugar after regular soda (which is why I am drinking it–need more blood sugar). That would mean diet soda should raise my blood sugar during a hypoglycemic episode. Trust me, it doesn’t. Maybe it only works on specially bred white mice……

  5. Doubting Thomas

Kind of the “Hospitals are the leading cause of death” kind of argument.

  6. Yes, of course 1 calorie of Diet Coke is more fattening than 143 calories in regular Coke. That makes sense. These junk studies aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. I drink a lot of diet soda. I don’t crave sweets. I don’t gain weight. This is pure garbage.
