UN report + BBC reporting = FUBAR article. What’s mercury vapor go to go with burning coal for electricity?

“Developing nations are facing growing health and environmental risks from increased exposure to mercury, according to a UN report. It says a growth in small-scale mining and coal burning are the main reasons for the rise in emissions… ‘The inhalation of mercury vapour can produce harmful effects on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, lungs and kidneys, and may be fatal..'” [BBC]

    I cannot understand how anyone is alive today, as there were no such environmental regulations before about 1960.

    By what miracle did people manage to survive? Not just people, but any living thing?
