No offense intended to our UK friends, but isn’t the food on Landing Strip One already bad enough without removing more salt, sugar and fat?

“But the Department of Health said it has helped reduce the levels of fat, sugar and salt in foods. A spokesman said: “By working with industry through the Responsibility Deal we have helped to reduce fat, sugar and salt in foods. There is now less salt in the food we buy, companies are cutting and capping calories and artificial trans fats are being widely taken out of food.” [The Guardian]

  1. Food quality has improved dramatically ’round here. Of course this latest war against sugar is another form of Nanny State, and I don’t doubt the industry will soon learn how to replace sugar with funny concoctions…

  2. I was shocked some years ago when I bought a sandwich at Starbucks by Marble Arch in London and was denied salt to go with it, on the grounds that it was bad for my health. “Sorry Sir, we don’t have any salt here — nobody asks for it.”

    That, and more than 20 pounds per day to use internet was my first impression of Starbucks in the Old Country. Not the same Starbucks I knew before. Or elsewhere.

The only way to stay thin now is to start another serious war (not a Mickey-Mouse one but a serious one like WW2), and/or to become a vegetarian follower of an Indian yogi or a Spartan Christian (I know I know…). By the way really good Indian vegetarian is very yummy – even kids would eat it – but not the average Brit – they don’t care how fat they are – fat is good as far as the average Brit is concerned – unless you are a member of the aristocracy. (Not sure about Lord Monckton of Brenchley – I think he eats cake.)

  5. Sure, don’t count on the parents feeding their children well.Why should they be responsible? Blame the industry.

  6. Weight increase = Intake of food – burnt food. Much regardless of what you eat as long as you get protein and carbohydrates in a sensible combination. At older age (that is, over 21 or so) you can also turn too the recipe by Jerome K. Jerome: A good steak + a pint of beer and a brisk walk. every now and then. Of course, be careful with the stuff that gives you cholesterol. That’s the worst for you and it is bad because you feel absolutely nothing before your heart goes bananas. I know; mine did.

  7. Cholesterol has nothing to with it. That’s a medical hoax invented by statinpushers. It’s an inflammatory reaction in an artery that causes the body to encapsulate the spot with gooey stuff to which floating matter sticks. Among which cholesterol. So cholesterol doesn’t cause anything. It just sticks there.
    You need to prevent the inflammatory reaction, not bother about cholesterol. Your brain is largely made of it. You need cholesterol, it’s good for you.

    • I believe that’s why aspirin is good for the heart: it reduces inflammation.

      • And med science blindly leaps to conclusion because it makes blood thinner. Sigh. Gives me heartburn. I take Boswellia and Turmeric.

Consider this: “Although taking an occasional aspirin or two is safe for most adults to use for headaches, body aches or fever, daily use of aspirin can have serious side effects, including internal bleeding.” Who said this? Mayo Clinic. Think about it!!! Internal bleeding can by the way result in death if not diagnosed correctly.

  9. Surely it is just the amount of food we eat generally, not nit picking at the amounts of ingredients. Sugar is far superior in taste than any artificial, sickly, too sweet, no taste, so called sweetener. Most of these food scare scams are akin to catastrophic man made global warming. What is the difference?
