Toomey: ‘We Republicans need to be willing to tolerate a temporary, partial government shutdown’ over debt ceiling’

They need to be willing to tolerate a shutdown 1-second longer than Obama… otherwise they (we) are lost.

“‘Our opportunity here is on the debt ceiling,’ Republican Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said on MSNBC. ‘We Republicans need to be willing to tolerate a temporary, partial government shutdown, which is what that could mean’.” [Reuters]

  1. Temporary? Damn Republicans and their small thinking.

  2. I read an interesting article entitled “Republicans win big in fiscal cliff outcome, continue to ‘starve the beast’ “. The premise is that the Republicans are winning the battle against big government since the federal government is now collecting 17 percent of GDP as tax revenue, versus an average of about 19 percent in the past few decades, and that this decrease in revenue will necessarily require a reduction in the size and scope of the government. Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but would that it were true. See http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/americas/united-states/130102/republicans-win-fiscal-cliff-starve-the-beast

  3. Obama will sign an executive order allowing him to raise the debt ceiling without congressional approval. He floated this last time and many agreed he has the power to do this.

  4. Rick,

Try reading the constitution. The executive branch has now authority to collect, spend or borrow money without congressional aproval. Of course the lack of constitutional authority hasn’t stopped the federal governament from doing much of anything since the end of WWII

  5. I’m reminded of what occurs when DC is blanketed by snow and “all non-essential government personnel should stay home.” The streets and public transport are all but empty. So, check the attendance records from the last DC snow-day and use those records to determine which positions (plus their functions and budgets) to cut permanently – that is, cut the positions for which no one showed up since, by demonstration, they are non-essential.

  6. Rick,
I was just thinking the same thing…. Obama has quite an impressive list of executive orders that bypass normal constitutional procedure on a wide variety of legislation.

  7. Does anyone seriously believe enough Republicans have the stones to stand up to the Democrats to make a difference? No way–they do whatever they are told just like good little boys and girls, then hold a press conference and declare victory. As I once said to a politician “You’d sell your grandmother to the devil to make political points”. Republican grandmothers should beware. Spineless creatures……Don’t expect it to change.

  8. Not a hope on that. They are two faces of the same coin. Obama lies to get his demands and then he flaunts and scourges the citizenship. The republicans lie by making empty promises then when they lose their shirts, they come out on their victory speech laughing at us and sighting an inner smile of satisfaction for having pleased their master Obama once more.
