Sandy Money

“The Obama administration’s $60-billion emergency aid package for victims of superstorm Sandy is now caught in the crossfire over the “fiscal cliff,” with some critics questioning why millions of dollars are directed to areas far from the epicenter of the storm.”

Sandy Aid Package Includes Millions for Smithsonian, Space Center, Forests

… The request features some surprising items: $23 million for tree plantings to “help reduce flood effects, protect water sources, decrease soil erosion and improve wildlife habitat” in forested areas touched by Sandy; $2 million to repair roof damage at Smithsonian buildings in Washington that pre-dates the storm; $4 million to repair sand berms and dunes at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida; and $41 million for clean-up and repairs at eight military bases along the storm’s path, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba….

  1. If this legislation is passed it must be very specific, with no leeway, for what the money can be used. Otherwise it will be misused for climate change and renewable energy projects as well as union based jobs.

  2. Don’t hold your breath! Watch as the bulk of the money DOES NOT go to storm victims, although a bit may dribble their way. Pre storm Smithsonian repairs? Guantanamo? Wasn’t is supposed to be shut down???

  3. How about a nice vacation to Hawaii for BO and family.

  4. I should get a million just for all the mental suffering I experience every time I read “superstorm Sandy”.

  5. Seems the only people actually helping Sandy victims are volunteers and charities. Wasn’t FEMA supposed to have learned something from the Katrina experience?

  6. New York and New Jersey elected not to prepare for an event like this, exacerbating the damage. And now they expect us to pay for it and anything else our fiscally responsible leaders can through into the bucket. I seem to remember Cuomo demanding, not asking, for billions in relief. Don’t prepare, don’t insure and let everyone else take care of you?

It looks to me as though FEMA is performing more poorly than it was reputed to perform in 2005. However, all I know is what I hear from the Obama PR folks.

  7. Victims of Superstorm Sandy act just like the victims of Hurricane Kartina in 2005; they just wait for the government to come and take care of them. Last time I was in New Orleans, in 2007, there were still a lot of houses with the blue, plastic roofs. But I’ll bet the money had been paid to replace them.

Contrast that with the citizens of Galveston and Harris Counties, TX after Hurricanes Rita and Ike; they rolled up their sleeves and got busy and didn’t wait for Uncle Sam to come in a make everything right.

  8. I agree with BOB, the state and local governments should have built sea walls and protective infrastructure. Now not only do they want the rest of the country to pay for the damage and loss of business caused by their negligence, but they want everyone else to pay for their protective infrastructure as well.
