The North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB) is keeping the heat on the EPA doctors involved in the EPA human testing scandal. The UNC doc involved is off the hook… for now.
Following last week’s news that the NCMB will investigate EPA physician Martha-Sue Carraway in the EPA human testing scandal, new correspondence from the NCMB indicates that investigations against EPA docs Andrew Ghio and Wayne Cascio are continuing.
Without explanation, the NCMB also said that it was closing the investigation of University of North Carolina doc Eugene Chung. Despite the lack of an explanation from the NCMB, we suspect the reason is that Dr. Chung was only involved in the post-experiment medical treatment of the 58-year old obese woman described in the case report, and not in any illegal human experimentation.
That said, we don’t think Dr. Chung should be entirely in the clear.
First, there is the question of Dr. Chung’s involvement in the dubious case report, which we have maintained is a prime example of the research misconduct of falsification. Next, was Dr. Chung ethically obligated to come forward on his own to blow the whistle on EPA’s illegal human testing? The NCMB probably didn’t consider either of these issues as we didn’t specifically raise them. So much wrongdoing to spotlight and so little time.
