“The Gillard government plans to link its carbon price scheme to Europe’s emissions trading scheme from 2015 while limiting Australian use of low-cost permits generated in developing countries.“
There is no possibility on God’s green Earth of there being a “Gillard Government” in 2015. Nor, for that matter, will their be a carbon constraint scam in Australia, it was already doomed when enacted.
The change would bring the price of carbon emissions in Australia closer into line with that in Europe, where attempts are being made to bolster the sagging price of permits.
The move is part of plans being considered by the government to change the carbon price scheme, as revealed by The Australian Financial Review, to scrap the $15 floor price from 2015 and limit the amount of potentially low-quality permits generated under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) that can be used by companies.
The linking with the European Union will only be one-way. Australian companies will be able to buy emissions trading scheme (ETS) permits to discharge their domestic carbon liability but European companies will not be able to buy Australian permits such as those generated by farmers.
