BRICs now leaving the anti-development enviro-zone: “While delegations of world leaders landed in the capital from Rio to the Rio +20, a voice of the Brazilian scientific community not only questioned the relevance of the event, as the problem of global warming itself.”
The owner of the voice of dissent is Ricardo Augusto Felicio, Professor, Department of Geography, University of São Paulo (USP). Felicio – for whom the Rio +20 is “bullshit” – gave an interview to the presenter Joe Smith last May. The video already has over 640,000 views on Youtube. On the page, you can find recordings of lectures and conferences climatologist. Tomorrow the Globe spoke with some of the students of the teacher who, in their curriculum lattes , wishes to inform you that made ”serious and critical research on climate variability and its consequences, demystifying the ‘anthropogenic climate change’ and built his ideology.”
One is Jacks Mandl Quintana, who believed that the planet was going through serious negative changes caused by human action. The view has totally changed after attending the course “Global Climate Change and Local Implications,” last fall.
- A friend of mine showed me discipline because the teacher adopts a discourse that goes beyond the common sense. He says studies by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) are false. Several scientists then abandoned the institution because of it. The climate studies are made based on models in statistics, and that everything can be manipulated – Jacks says.
According to the student – who want to work in the area of environmental consulting – the Earth has warmed and cooled many times throughout history. If today the young man prefers to bike, bus and subway transport as an option, is solely for economic reasons. “I can not afford to have a car,” he says.
- We have to talk, try to pass on to people that they can become better informed before you believe it – he says, referring to global warming.
Who agrees with Jacks is Philip Dudley Fernandes, who attended the same course last semester. For Philip, the human influence on climate is only possible on a local scale, as in Cubatao, city of São Paulo known for high levels of pollution. The young want to teach in public schools of São Paulo, and says it is inevitable to pass their views to students.
- I would try to show the two trends (and skeptical environmentalist) and let students make their decision. In my opinion, the whole class is politicized. The teacher not only exposes the content, it stands as well. So, will inevitably expose my point of view – he says.
The student Mayara Vivian, who also aligns to the vision of his classmates, clarifies that the skeptics – are known as those who do not believe in climate change as scientific fact – are misunderstood. They are, she said, people who also oppose environmental degradation, pollution and deforestation.
- We hurl “crazy”, they think we want to clog the world’s CO2. People are painting an abstract landscape, apocalyptic, while we have real problems in this, as families living in poor conditions or 5 km from the university, for example – he argues.
