Governor Bill Haslam has chosen not to go along with conservative lawmakers in condemning an international environmental program. Tennessee’s House and Senate both voted overwhelmingly to oppose the United Nations sustainability blueprint called Agenda 21. Haslam left the resolution unsigned.
The legislature’s resolution essentially attacks Agenda 21 as a global conspiracy to seize power, under the veneer of environmentalism. Haslam quietly chose not to sign on. He left a line blank where he would typically put his signature.
A spokesman says while Haslam doesn’t support Agenda 21, he “didn’t feel compelled and isn’t required to take any action on the resolution.”
Lawmakers use resolutions to make non-binding statements. Many simply honor hometown constituents. Almost two thousand joint resolutions have passed since Haslam took office last year. WPLN searched through hundredsand couldn’t find a single other time the governor didn’t sign one.
