“The problem of overweight children has reached crisis proportions,” according to the Senator. The Dept of Public Health also claims 1/3 of the states children are obese. Both are false assumptions. Childhood obesity rates in the US and more than a dozen countries have been largely flat or actually declining for well over a decade. Alarmist claims from public officials about an obesity epidemic and declining health and life expectancy in America are simply unsupported by any evidence. But, it does help sell more government programs, regulations and mandates to make everyone eat and do what the nannies think best.
We live across the street from Brookhaven High School, and obesity is not a problem from what we see.
Maybe one in 20, hardly an epidemic, but the present gov’t doesn’t want to look at actual people, just biases statistics.
Get rid of the whole regime, or else look out for the same people come after you, and tell you what to eat
Jim, it’s not just the “fat kids” who are obese. A large number of perfectly normal children are considered overweight or obese. The “normal” gap is so narrow at that age that less than 2″ height gap separates the overweight from the underweight.

Using BMI I was overweight…6 months later I was underweight. I grew 3/4 of an inch.
IMO BMI should only be used on adults.
Even better, BMI should never be used at all, except as a first check between a doctor and an adult patient, if there is reason to believe that the person has a weight issue that needs to be specifically addressed. BMI is a completely useless and harmful construction that has no basis in real health risk or assessment.
They can’t teach the kids how to read or do science, but they know what’s best for them when it comes to food???
I’m still trying to figure out how this is the government’s business.
