World population needs to be stabilised quickly and high consumption in rich countries rapidly reduced to avoid “a downward spiral of economic and environmental ills”, warns a major report from the Royal Society.
Contraception must be offered to all women who want it and consumption cut to reduce inequality, says the study published on Thursday, which was chaired by Nobel prize-winning biologist Sir John Sulston.
The assessment of humanity’s prospects in the next 100 years, which has taken 21 months to complete, argues strongly that to achieve long and healthy lives for all 9 billion people expected to be living in 2050, the twin issues of population and consumption must be pushed to the top of political and economic agendas. Both issues have been largely ignored by politicians and played down by environment and development groups for 20 years, the report says.
I suggest that the “editor” look a bit more deeply at the issue of overpopulation. Recent gains in agriculture, building efficiencies, and other technological improvements boggle the mind and deferred the disasters that were projected for the1970s. Please don’t promote good luck to economic wisdom. The world did have famines in the 1930s and around 1960 in China. Malthus warned in his 1803 essay that the potato would increase living standards in Ireland, but it might be susceptible to disease. The potato blight and famine occurred just 40 years later.
The recent decrease in fecundity rates is welcome news even if it is causing some economic dislocations.

Please don’t downgrade human ingenuity
and labor to “good luck.”
The Royal Society, the US National Academy of Sciences, and the United Nations have probably been actively involved in the events leading to Climategate since at least 1946.

These folks must suffer from some bent gene that causes them to constantly worry about Biblical Disaster. It usually takes the form of Malthus’ BS nonsense and totally ignores history and particularly Mankind’s penchant to invent neat stuff that makes life better for all.

Without access to the energy source that powers the Sun and the cosmos, scientists cannot provide food and energy for our growing population.
