Bonner Cohen: Obama EPA enacts cap-and-trade agenda

In its latest move to drive up the cost of energy to consumers, businesses, and manufacturers, the Obama EPA March 27 issued a final CO2 cap on emissions from electric utilities. EPA’s action will effectively ban the construction of new coal-fired power plants and likely cause rolling blackouts.

In its latest move to drive up the cost of energy to consumers, businesses, and manufacturers, the Obama EPA March 27 issued a final rule regulating greenhouse-gas emissions from electric utilities. EPA’s action will effectively ban the construction of new coal-fired power plants.

Under the rule, no new power plant will be allowed to emit more than 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt of electricity produced. On average, U.S. coal plants emit 1,768 pounds of CO2 per megawatt of electricity. The rule requires future plants to use as yet non-existent carbon capture and control technologies to cut their emissions to the new standard. With no technology available to bring down CO2 emissions to the new standard, EPA, in the name of combating climate change, is effectively telling the coal industry, which produces 55 percent of our nation’s electricity, that its days are numbered.

The new rule exempts plants that are either under construction or in the permitting process. Existing coal plants have been under relentless regulatory assault by the Obama EPA, which has subjected them to stringent mercury emissions standards and cross-state pollution rules. As a result, about 13 percent of existing coal-fired power plants are expected to shut down in the near future.

While natural gas from America’s energy-rich shale formations will be able to fill some of the void created by EPA’s war on coal, families and businesses in the coal-dependent heartland of America are facing the real possibility of rolling blackouts in the coming years, as coal plants shut down before natural gas can come on line to take coal’s place. In these circumstances, dramatically higher electricity prices, particularly in the Midwest, are unavoidable.

  1. The EPA is doing exactly what Obama want, more basic costs of electricity so the costs of renewables will seem reasonable. The same with petrol
We must do all we can in Nov to rid ourselves of Obama and the EPA.

    Get out and vote!!!

  2. It would be really nice if it mattered if Congress called them in and asked them to prove the difference in the impact of 1000 pounds and 2000 pounds on climate change.

Considering that it cannot be proven, then the EPA would have demonstrated the obvious: They are driven by agenda, not science or environment.

  3. It would be even better if the legislative branch of the government, charged with making laws, was not usurped by a regulatory office of the executive branch. Especially considering how there is no recourse for the public to “vote out” an appointed bureaucrat.

  4. This move will drive up the price of natural gas and hasten the depletion of this valuable energy resource. Coal is only good for electricity generation. It is foolish to cook, heat water, or heat with electricity. Three Btus are expended to get one Btu of worth. Use natural gas for these purposes plus transportation and chemicals.

The EPA made this announcement during the Supreme Court considerations on Obamacare that hid it from view. The public should be screaming about this ruling. We are losing our freedom.

After this ruling will be cuting carbon dioxide down to 100 Btu per kilowatt-hr which eliminate fossil fuel use for electricity. Next will be no production of nuclear radiation which will end nuclear power. You all will rely on solar or windmill which may be available 4 hours a day. Naturally, the rich and well-connected will live the same as today.

  5. The USA is facing very dangerous times. There is an element in control that is determined to destroy the US economy and way of life. If the American people have still not yet realised that ‘666’ is amongst their midst, then I truly urge the American people to start praying… “God help America!”

  6. I grow extremely tired of writers who don’t understand the units associated with the numbers they quote. It’s 1000 lb of CO2 per megawatt hour, or 1000 lb/hr of CO2 per megawatt.
