Just what we need — an EPA that doesn’t speak English.
AFP reports:
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is emerging as a hot issue in preparations for June’s Rio conference, styled as a once-in-a-generation chance to restore a sick planet to good health.
The US is fighting a proposal, backed according to France by least 100 countries, for transforming UNEP from a poorly noticed, second-string unit into a planetary super-agency.
The amazing thing is that this is reported by AFP (Agence France-Presse). Up there near Reuters in circulation, and beyond UPI. And obviously more guts than both, the green backlash will be terrible.
The “100 countries” backing the proposal are dominated largely by the highly Balkanized states of what is sometimes called the Islamic World, a collection of mostly dictatorships and theocracies that are motivated by conservative (some would say Fundamentalist) interpretations of the Koran. The Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation has 57 members, 56 of which are United Nations member states. Their goal seems to be nothing less than a world ruled by Shariah Law.
