Europeans freezing to death because it’s too warm

A loss of sea ice could be a cause of the bitter winds that have swept across the UK in the past week, weather experts say

Science behind the big freeze: is climate change bringing the Arctic to Europe?
STEVE CONNOR SATURDAY 04 FEBRUARY 2012

The bitterly cold weather sweeping Britain and the rest of Europe has been linked by scientists with the ice-free seas of the Arctic, where global warming is exerting its greatest influence.

A dramatic loss of sea ice covering the Barents and Kara Seas above northern Russia could explain why a chill Arctic wind has engulfed much of Europe and killed 221 people over the past week.

The death toll from Arctic blast has been particularly severe in the Ukraine, where many of the dead have been people sleeping on the streets. Heating and food tents have been set up to ease their hardship. In Romania 24 people are known to have died and 17 in Poland.

A growing number of experts believe complex wind patterns are being changed because melting Arctic sea ice has exposed huge swaths of normally frozen ocean to the atmosphere above.

In particular, the loss of Arctic sea ice could be influencing the development of high-pressure weather systems over northern Russia, which bring very cold winds from the Arctic and Siberia to Western Europe and the British Isles, the scientists believe. An intense anticyclone over north-west Russia is behind the bitterly cold easterly winds that have swept across Europe and some climate scientists say the lack of Arctic sea ice brought about by global warming is responsible. 1. “A growing number of experts”

    “the scientists believe”

    “some climate scientists say”

Who could doubt people with such stellar credentials?

More likely, Mr. Connor just made it up. It is journalists who tell us
    journalism is an honorable profession.

  2. “could be influencing” means “we don’t know”
” is behind the bitterly cold easterly winds” does not mean “cause”
Interesting use of language by journalists that do not understand the real problem.

  3. Funny about that, because here in Sydney,Australia, we have been experiencing much colder temperatures during our summer and december showed some days with the coldest temperatures since 1916! We also endure too much rain and would those “experts” claim, that what happens in the
Northern Hemisphere affects us in the Southern half of the globe? There are totally no signs of the Antartica losing huge chunks of ice and in the end, so what, as climate-changes have been with us since Mother Earth came into being some 4.6 billion years ago. Those so-called phenomena are not a rare event and will visit our planet over and over again. The only thing, that the Western world needs is to ensure, that there is plenty of electricity available from fossil fuel and nuclear energy just for such events and dump the “green/clean energy”, which does not help at all and cost tax-payers too much money to prop up. We need common sense and not hype and doomsay.

  4. I just read, within the past week or so, that the sea ice is coming in faster and thicker than usual. So much so that the crab fisherman may lose their entire season. How does that jibe with “dramatic loss of sea ice”?

Here in Colorado, we just got a bunch of snow, 10″ – 22″ in the Denver Metro area, we had about 20″ in the western suburbs. The media has been going nuts over the approaching storm, causing panic and runs on grocery stores. They’ve been calling it the “10th worst storm” and “monster storm”, “up to 6 feet of snow” (yeah, in the southern mountains!), “largest storm this year” (yeah, they’re not counting all the snow we got in Oct, Nov, and Dec!), etc. As a result, many communities wasted money sending plows out to do the side streets – totally unnecessary. That amount of snow is nothing here. We had the first foot of it shoveled mid-day yesterday and the remainder today after it stopped. It was sunny and in the high 20s so half of it is already melted and the shoveled parts are DRY. Most people had no trouble getting around, outside of the heaviest part of the storm yesterday morning.

The media clearly has nothing better to do than cause a panic in people who are unfamiliar with the weather here.

  5. The scientists have won this battle (there are 22 non-fiction books written by scientists and people who care about the truth that show the carbon warming theory is bad science, or outright fraud.) But, few non-scientists read these books; the secular debate and battle still rages; the masses that could turn this tide are over whelmed by the power of the media, a few rich middlemen, and socialist governments.

I have a fictional novel just out called EXPOSURE. It is a fast-paced action drama, a romantic thriller, with the hero battling criminal and terrorist elements trying to keep him testifying at a nationally televised debate. The hero is a charismatic speaker, a climate modeler who has switched sides, and who can exposes those pushing the false warming theory from within – in a manner that the average person can understand. This book may help turn the tide in the secular battle. It can be ordered by a single click on my website http://www.rexfleming.com where my credentials as a scientist and former advocate are revealed.

  6. Really understandable. Since the water is not covered with ice, it is warmer than the Arctic air because it sucks heat out of the air, causing much colder temperatures in the Ukraine which results in more global warming deaths. Took me quite a while to understand that heat went from where it isn’t to where it is, rather than the other way around.

  7. Based on that theory Bob, the real cause could just as well be all the wind turbines. Has anyone done any studies about the affect of taking all that energy out of the atmosphere. Does taking all that energy out of the atmosphere slow or change the wind patterns resulting in droughts (rain never gets there) or floods (rain never leaves)?
We know energy is not created or lost, just changed. So what’s the affect of wind turbines removing energy from the atmosphere and putting it on the grid?

  8. Wow, it gets cold in the winter, what a surprise! Have the worlds glaciers began growing yet? Has the Arctic ice cap regained the 40% it has lost since 1960? Are there no longer melt rivers flowing off Greenlands ice cap? Have the two giant icebergs coming off Greenland and Antarctica decided to stay attached? Are there no longer methane geysers coming from lakes in Alaska and offshore inside the Arctic circle from the melting of the permafrost and deep sea methane clathrates? Is there no longer an oil exploration rush going on in the Arctic because the the ice has come back? When the answer to all these questions is yes instead of no, then we can say global warming is not an issue!
